Amber Sports 160-Pound Threaded Weight Set

Good set of weights4

This is a nice sturdy set of weights with good threading. Seems sort of cheesy to say as a set of weights had better be sturdy but you can tell there is some build quality with these. The paint is heavy looks to scratch instead of chip off which is good. The collar threads are nice and deep and the collars themselves are chunks of metal - they will never break and they fit nicely on the bars. You end up with 140lbs worth of plates with the rest of the weight taken up by the bars. Sometimes the collars can get a little loose on the freeweights when doing hammer curls but you're going to see that on any collar based set.

All in all this is a nice base set. 160lbs for ~$100 you can't really go wrong.More detail ...

Gold's Gym exercise bench4

So far I am pleased with the bench. I am a small woman (5'3" 116 lbs) and the bench is the right size for me. I would not recommend it for a much larger person as it doesn't seem sturdy enough for too much weight. For the price I would say it is a good buy.More detail ...

Bowflex SelectTech Adjustable Bench Series 3.1

Well-constructed and great value5

This is a very nice bench by any standards and as other reviews mention it was very easy to put together. The instructions are well-written the diagrams clear and the whole thing is well-engineered and heavy duty construction. The manual says it can hold a 300lb. person plus 300lbs. or weight and I don't doubt that at all. It is also very easy to adjust and doesn't have a lot of little parts. It took me about 50 minutes to assemble it and I went very slowly.

It is true that there are only four positions you can use on this bench but for most people that is plenty. Also it is a perfect product to use with a dumbbell workout. If you go this route I recommend either Pair of Personal PowerBlock Adjustable Dumbbells - 5-45 Pounds in 5 Pound Increments or PowerBlock SportBlock Dumbbell Set. These adjustable dumbbells are rugged less expensive than other brands and the safest that I know of.

Some other details about the bench... the material is a medium thick vinyl and mine came with a 1 inch tear. I did not consult customer support yet but I will update this review to reflect my experience of them when I do. I think a better material and padding would improve the product overall but at this price point I think it's plenty rugged.

If you get this bench you can eventually get a power rack that can be used with your bench and as a squat/deadlift rack. One that I like is Phys-x Half Rack 10418 but you there are others depending upon your needs.

If you are new (or old) to this type of training I recommend Build Muscle Lose Fat Look Great: Everything You Need to Know to Transform Your Body and Starting Strength. These are probably the ONLY two books most people will ever need on strength training building mass etc. They are BOTH dense with great information systematically laid out. I have other suggestions on my listmania lists check my profile if you are interested. I also reviewed most of the adjustable dumbells on available on here.More detail ...

Good value for a great barbell set4

The bar is lightweight and the set has a nice feel to it when loaded. It is perfect for home use with video workouts such as Jari Love or Cathe Friedrich. I would supplement this set with some 2.5 lb weights. The 10 lbs plates are a tad bulky but at this price - who cares?More detail ...

Great Bench! 5

This is a super bench for the price. It has 4 different height adjustable positions and each leg can be either folded or reclined to a different angle to further incline or decline this bench. Cap Barbell Fitness FID Bench

A Great Workout Bench4

This is a surprisingly sturdy lightweight bench to use for dumbbell exercises. Not only is it affordable but it is easier to put together than the average treadmill. The manual's instructions for putting the bench together are clear and easy to follow and it offers good advice on how to get started coming up with an exercise routine. The bench's backrest is adjustable (a hard-to-find but important feature) so you can do the full range of dumbbell exercises.

Customers should know before buying that the bench is designed to support a maximum user weight of 250 lbs with a combined dumbbell weight of 100 lbs. So although you cannot use this bench for lifting massive weights it is ideal for people who are just starting out or who are focusing on fitness instead of extreme bodybuilding.More detail ...

US Weight F0115 115-Pound Duracast Weight Set With Dumbbells

Very Durable!5

I have been using these for over a year and they seem very durable. However take note that I do take care of them (i.e. I do not drop them onto the ground from high above; instead I gently lower my hands to the ground before dropping them no more than 4-5 inches off the ground on in-door carpet). They do seem like they can be dropped on concrete just fine too though.

These seem to be constructed well on the outside but the durability may vary from one set to another because the weights have some kind of powder in them and a (in my case well-constructed) plug keeps the powder in.

The clips work well. There are 6 total. Two of the clips are (barely) bigger (but bigger nonetheless) and very strong. These two clips do not slip at all handling the heaviest of weights on this weight set. I use these two clips on one dumbell handle. The other 4 clips are not as strong but works about as well as the two larger ones when combined. I use 2 of these clips on each side (4 total) of the other dumbbell handle. More detail ...

CAP Barbell Xodus Basic Mid-Width Adjustable Exercise Weight Bench

Great bench5

I got this about a week ago. Assembly was pretty easy took less than an hour. The only problem I had was that one of the pins that hold the uprights in place had some stripped threads. I called the customer service number and they sent me two replacements which I received within a week.

Bench press: The bench has four positions: flat decline and two incline. The uprights are adjustable to four different heights. The bottom part of the seat is also adjustable to flat or two different incline positions. While doing incline bench presses at the higher of the two incline positions it's nice to put the lower part of the seat up at it's highest incline position as it holds you in place so you don't slide downwards while doing your reps. There are also a pair of extra barbell holders located lower down on the uprights; if you can't finish a rep you can dump the bar in there. The bar will come to rest about an inch above your chin so you don't have to lift it very far to get it in there. That's a really nice safety feature. Overall it's very comfortable and works great for any sort of bench press incline decline or flat. There's nothing that gets in the way the uprights are adjustable to get the bar at the right height and the bench has a really solid feel to it. I use a 6' standard bar which works fine. Of course a 7' bar would work as well.

Squat rack: You can use this bench for a squat rack. The lower bar that holds the uprights together is curved so you can stand between them. You just flip the bench forward (It stays in the straight up position). Then you raise the uprights as high as they go and turn them around backwards so they're facing the correct direction. They're tubular so you just take the pins out and turn them around. Ideally the uprights could go up a little higher as you have to squat down somewhat in order to get under the bar. But you're doing squats anyway so what's the point in complaining that you have to do an extra 1/5th of a rep. Besides it's infinitely better than picking the weight up off the floor.

Leg attachment: This is removable which is nice because it's not in the way when you're not using it. It has two different heights I found the lower one best for leg curls and the upper one better for leg extensions. If you try using the leg curl attachment on the upper height the padded bar wants to roll up your legs as you do the exercise. On the lower position there's no problem. The padding on the bars is very thick and comfortable. For leg extensions the bar goes right across the front of your ankles and stays there throughout the exercise. Same with the leg curls - once I got it at the right height it stays in the same place on your legs throughout the exercise with no rolling back and forth. The bar that holds the barbell plates is 1" in diameter and there's an adapter sleeve included for Olympic plates (2" diameter).

Preacher curl bench: This goes in the same place as the leg attachment. I originally thought there was a problem with the barbell holder which sticks out from the front of this as it wouldn't allow me to get a full extension at the bottom of the movement. But I found that if you move forward on the seat so that your legs are under the preacher bench and the middle of your biceps are about even with the top of the bench it works just fine. There's no interference from the barbell holder at all. Even though that barbell holder is only a few inches wide the bar balances just fine on it and it's a handy feature.

Overall I can't find anything to complain about with this bench. After a little experimenting around to find the correct position to be in when using the preacher curl bench and which height the leg attachment needs to be at for the leg curl to work correctly everything works fine. The bench is nice and solid and the padding on the seat is thick and firm. The replacement part I needed was received quickly at no charge and with no questions asked. I'm really happy with this purchase.

Best Fitness BFPR10 Multi Press Rack

Very good compact rack4

Been using for a couple of months and am quite happy with the product. Assembly was quick & fast. Noticed there were two stable positions (vertical bars slightly closer at the top or slightly wider at the bottom).

Best features:

* The safety bars (both squats and bench presses) are extremely useful when you don't have a spotter.

* Easily do both squats & bench presses on the same side by adjusting height.

* Compact footprint. You still need an 7 ft Olympic sized bar. A 6 ft bar will do if the separation between the joints is standard (I think it's 52.5" or so).

* Price! Couldn't find too many in this range that offers the safety bars as well.

Cons:

* The horizontal bar at the bottom is mounted a little high so it can interfere with some benches. I have a folding bench and need to swap the front-back directions to get it to fit. Standard workout benches probably won't have this issue. So buy this first and then the bench.

* Doesn't tell you how much weight you can safely use. I have a 300lb set but am not using all of it right now.

Overall very happy with the product and would highly recommend to someone who is in need of a compact footprint for doing squats (as well as bench presses).

PowerBlock SportBench Dip Attachment

Okay Dip Bar3

I bought this dip bar to go with my power block bench. The idea was to keep my home gym very simple and to make the smallest footprint possible. Two stage3 power blocks the power block stand the power block bench and the dip bar. This equipment has definitely given me a small footprint.

The power block dip bar attachment is just okay. It's not as stable as I would like. The dip bar attachment itself is VERY sturdy but it's got a lot of side to side play (not the dip bar but the bench.) You can still effectively do dips but when you start struggling the bench starts shaking. I prefer a SOLID platform when doing dips. Another problem is that my grips turn and try to work themselves off. I had to take them off and spray them with 3m upholstery glue so they would stick and stay stuck.

If this bar wasn't so convenient I'd give it a 2 for its stability. More detail ...

Phoenix 99226 Power Pro Olympic Bench

Ok for price if you're not too tall.4

For the price this low-end home gym is generally able to do the things I wanted a cheap home gym to do. However there are a few issues you need to consider before buying it. The biggest issue is ergonometric - this unit is not designed to be used by anyone over perhaps 5'10" or 5'11". I'm 6'1" and this creates problems for me. I have to find work-arounds to use a unit designed for people smaller than me. The problem is that form is very important when doing the exercises (when you don't pay attention to form you either reduce the effectiveness of the exercise or risk injury) and finding work-arounds sometimes compromises your form during the exercise.

There are also a few quality issues but these were not entirely unexpected considering the price of the unit. It would have been nice if the bench padding were a little better but its adequate. The two most annoying quality issues involve the plate bars (the bars that hold the weights). This first issue was with the plate bar on the lat tower (cable) unit. It wasn't level. This means the weights keep trying to fall off one side as you put them on. The second issue is also with the plate bars. The unit is designed to accommodate standard plates (small holes in the middle) or Olympic plates (big holes in the middle). A "sleeve" is included with the unit that slips over the standard size plate bar that enables one to use Olympic plates (big holes). However the outer diameter of the sleeve is slightly smaller than standard Olympic size so an Olympic size spring collar (to hold the weights on the bar) is too big and doesn't work. I went down to Home Depot and bought wood clamps to hold the plates in place. Kind of a pain but functional (just another work-around). If you buy this unit you probably want to go with standard plates (small hole) rather than Olympic plates (big hole).

So I put this at 4 stars because for this price you really can't expect too much and it generally delivers what I expected a cheap home gym unit to do - with the one caveat: persons over 5'10" should try to find a home gym designed for taller people. Since only 5% of the US population is over 6 feet tall manufacturers tend to design for smaller people. If you're tall good luck on that search.

Follow-up note. At this time of the writing above this unit was sold by several vendors on Amazon so its worth comparing the pricing. When I say above that this unit is OK "for the price" means the price I paid for it not the price necessarily listed here now. At the current price (on 7/7/07) I would only list it as 2 stars but could not see how to change the star rating.More detail ...

Best Fitness BFOB10 Olympic Bench

For the price I'm very impressed4

I've been working out with weights for 15 years but have been out of the game for the last several due to personal reasons. A few months ago I was told by my Dr. that I need to lose about 25 lbs. so I decided to get back in the game after a 2 year hiatus. However because of my very limited time and having 2 young children at home I did not want to go back to the gym at this time. I'm away from my kids enough during my work day so I decided to set myself up at home. The problem was as it is with most people I have very limited space and certainly don't have a large extra room I can dedicate as a home gym.

I bought this bench because the price was appealing and because I needed something that would fold up and take up less space since it's being stored in our bedroom. I was actually surprised at how sturdy it is for a folding bench. The bench is solid and folds up and stores very easily in a small corner of our bedroom. The mid width is perfect for my 6' bar. It will handle 6' and 7' bars but you won't be able to use it with a bar less than 6' long (the distance between the uprights is too wide for shorter bars). It's very stable and wide enough that you don't pinch your hands when re-racking the bar. It's not as heavy duty stable or wide as an olympic size bench but it's less than half the price of a good olympic width bench and takes up much less space as well. And there are no folding olympic width benches available that I know of (not to mention I don't have the room for a bench that wide). The uprights have a good range of adjustment heights and can be turned around to do squats. The adjustment pins seem a little thin to me but this isn't a gym quality olympic bench and it is not rated to hold a dumptruck like those benches.

On the down side (and the only minor reasons that I did not rate it a 5) the back rest pad is spaced a little far away from the seat pad making for an uncomfortable gap under your lower back when doing flat presses. It's not detrimental to the exercise as your lower back doesn't touch the pad when doing flat presses anyway you just need to make sure that you slide down far enough toward the leg developer so that your butt is fully supported by the lower pad. The backrest pad really could have been moved a little closer to the lower pad to close up this gap some and decrease the overhang of the pad at the top end (see comment about squatting). With inclined presses it's not an issue only when laying flat on your back. Also the top of the backrest pad extends a little to far past the uprights and is partially in the way when aproaching the uprights from the top end for doing squats. Ideally you should pivot the backrest up and out of the way to use the bench for squatting a minor inconvenience.

One other downside is that the owner's manual does not tell you what the weight capacities of the bench are. This information is not posted on any web sites I visited when shopping for a bench either so I had to contact the manufacturer to get this information. Incidentally the maximum weight for the uprights is 300 lb. and the maximum weight for the leg developer is 100 lb. I think the weight capacity for the leg developer is a little low but when using the heavier weights one could always do one leg at a time effectively doubling the weight capacity per leg. I think this is a minor compromise considering the low cost of the bench.

Assembly was very easy and took only about 45 minutes. They even give you the tools you will need to assemble the bench. The assembly instructions were pretty good with only 1 or 2 minor discrepancies that anyone with any type of common sense could figure out. Bolt holes all lined up the finish is very good and there are not a lot of parts to get lost.

Overall I would rate this bench as an excellent buy. For people looking for a good quality stable bench for the home that does not cost a lot takes up little space when stored and can handle a full 300 lb. load this bench fits the bill very well. Of course if you are a serious bodybuilder who needs to squat 500 lb. you will need to look at full sized olympic benches and cages but you should already know that. This bench was not designed to do the work and hold the weight of a full cage but it doesn't take up the whole room either. This bench was designed for the average person looking to get/stay in shape at home and it meets that goal very well. The average person working out at home typically won't need to load more than 300 lb. on the uprights.

I would not hesitate to buy this bench again.More detail ...
